Introduction
At Lucy’s Therapy Space, I am fully committed to safeguarding the welfare of children, young people, and adults who may be vulnerable or in need of support.
As a sole practitioner providing professional counselling, I take seriously my responsibility to protect those I work with from harm. This safeguarding policy outlines how I meet my duties in line with current legislation and best practice.
My approach is guided by key legislation, including the Children Act 2004 (amended by the Children and Social Work Act 2017) and the Care Act 2014. These frameworks inform how I act to prevent harm, promote well-being, and create a safe environment for all clients.
My Commitment to Safeguarding
Safeguarding is an ongoing commitment — not a one-off process. At Lucy’s Therapy Space, I strive to provide a safe, respectful, and supportive environment where clients feel heard and protected. I do this by:
- Staying alert to possible signs of abuse or harm.
- Taking concerns seriously and acting on them appropriately.
- Ensuring confidentiality while prioritising safety.
- Creating a therapeutic space where clients can speak freely without fear or judgment.
Legal and Ethical Guidance
My safeguarding practice is shaped by established legal and ethical frameworks, including:
- The Children Act 1989 (and amendments)
- The Equality Act 2010
- The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)
I also follow the latest national guidance relevant to safeguarding, including:
- Working Together to Safeguard Children (HM Government, 2023)
- Keeping Children Safe in Education (Department for Education, 2023)
- Information Sharing Advice for Safeguarding Practitioners (HM Government, 2023)
As a registered professional, I adhere to the ethical standards set out by my governing body and the counselling profession.
Working Across the UK
Although I am based in Cheltenham and offer in-person counselling from my therapy room, I also work with clients across the UK through online sessions.
I understand that safeguarding procedures can differ between local authorities. When necessary, I take care to ensure any concerns are referred to the correct safeguarding agency for the client’s area. I stay informed about local safeguarding pathways and use official channels to make referrals when needed.
What Safeguarding Means to Me
Safeguarding involves protecting people from abuse, neglect, and exploitation while promoting their health, rights, and dignity. This includes:
- Supporting children and vulnerable adults in their development and well-being.
- Taking preventative action to reduce risks of harm.
- Providing a safe and nurturing counselling space.
- Responding promptly and effectively when concerns arise.
Child protection and adult safeguarding refer specifically to actions taken when there is a known or suspected risk of harm.
Recognising Abuse
Abuse involves the misuse of power, control, or trust in a way that causes harm to another person. Abuse can take many forms, including:
- Physical Abuse – Causing physical harm or injury.
- Sexual Abuse – Non-consensual or exploitative sexual activity.
- Emotional Abuse – Behaviour that causes emotional distress or undermines self-worth.
- Neglect – Failing to meet a person’s basic physical or emotional needs.
- Financial Abuse – Exploiting or misusing someone’s money, property, or resources.
- Online Abuse – Harmful behaviour via digital platforms or social media.
Some people may be more vulnerable to abuse due to disability, illness, or isolation. I remain alert to signs of harm and respond with care and urgency where necessary.
Responding to Safeguarding Concerns
If I become aware of a situation where a child, young person, or adult may be at risk of harm, I follow a clear procedure:
- I record all relevant information using a Safeguarding Concern Record to ensure accurate documentation.
- I refer the concern to the appropriate safeguarding authority based on the client’s location.
- I avoid using personal devices for referrals and ensure that the process is handled professionally and securely.
Ongoing Responsibility and Professional Standards
As the sole therapist at Lucy’s Therapy Space, I take full responsibility for keeping my safeguarding knowledge up to date. I regularly review guidance and undertake safeguarding training to ensure that I can respond confidently and appropriately to any concerns.
By holding myself to high professional standards and putting client safety first, I aim to provide a counselling space that is both safe and empowering for everyone who seeks support.
